Evaluation

1. FRONT COVER

For my masthead I have placed the two 'R' letters 7 sizes larger then the 'N' to promote more of the Rock & Roll symbol. Also I have put the 'R's in a different colour to the 'N' to highlight and make them more eye catching to the reader.
For my background I have edited the colour to sepia to make the text appear bolder and easier to read. Also I didnt feel that a complete black and white image worked as effectivly.
At the bottom of my front cover I had added a quote from the band. This is something that they would often say at a gig to their audience before they would play the song 'Family Guy'.
I have added a coverline of what is going to be featured inside the magazine and what the second featured band is called.
Underneath the coverline of the band, in the photograph, I have added an image of another article about them. This had been in the newpaper that week to add to there come back article in my magazine.
I have placed my barcode in the bottom right hand corner of my front cover because that part of the photograph is the darkest and I felt that it would highlight the barcode, which would make it helpful to notice when buying.

I haven't used a costume in the photo shoot of the band because I wanted them to feel as comfortable as possibly, so we could see the real side of them rather then when they are dressed up to play a gig. The props they are using are beer cans and garden furniture. The beer can shows that they are relaxing and socialising and the garden furniture gives them something to play around with and lean on.

The camera angle I have used is straight on. I've tried to capture as much of the band members bodies as I can in the photograph without it looking too clutterd.

I have used san-serif for all of my font as I want it to look masculine because of my target audience mainy being male. My typography comes across as if the magazine is talking directly to you rather then a wide audience. There are a lot of common phrases and slang used throughout the magazine to interact with the age group.

The music genre for my magazine will be indie, rock and althernative music. My magazine presents this well by the language and use of house colours. Even though the genre's of music are not 'dark' and don't play heavy music, the colours they use to promote themselves are mainly black, grey, white, red...

My house colours are, black, white, yellow, grey and blue. The main colours I have used are black, white and grey because I feel this represents my magazine well and helps the readers get a better understand of what type of magazine they are about to read.

CONTENTS PAGE

In the headling for my contents page I have changed the two 'R' colours around to make it more effective with the background. With the layout of my images I wanted them to all be on one side of the page and have the writting on the other. The reason for this is because when someone turns a page in a magazine the first thing to catch their eye will be the images on the contents page. On top of the images I have placed some number pages to direct the reader what page to go to if there is something specfic they want to read.

The way I have laid out the text on the contents page is too  make it look like a new paper article. I feel that this layout is very effective and comes across very formal.
Also underneath the title of the magazine I have added 'THIS WEEK' and the date to make my magazine  a lot more sophisticated.

The images for the contents page are photographs that I had taken for the features page and front cover but incorporated them to go onto this page. I have screen grabbed my features page and added that to the contents to show the reader what will be inside rather then just talking about it.

On my contents page I have also used san-serif for all of my font because I still want to keep the masculine look. In the text on the left I have made the titles of each section clear and detailed for the reader.
The style of my contents page is very uniformed'. The images look quite clutterd because of them all being so close together and having the page numbers overlapping. The house colours I have used for my contents page are grey, black, white and red. I feel having the grey background has worked out quite well because of the colours of the images I have used.

FEATURES PAGE

For the layout of my features page I've used quite a lot of overlapping and text wraping on images.

The camera angle of the main image of my features page has been shot at a low angle. I decided to use this angle to make them look powerful.
The angles of the other images on this page are all shot straight on apart from one of the guitarest.
When taking the photographs at a live gig you are able to see the band playing their instruments and the expressions on their faces, thereofore there are no need for props.

I have used the same font I used on the front cover and the contents page that I used on the features page, instead I change the colour frequently and the size of the text. At the begining of each text box I have made the first letter of the article bigger then the rest of the font to make it more intresting to the eye and to reader. The way I wrote the article comes across as informative. Not only have I wrote about up and coming bands, spoke about The Vinyl Junkie's gig, I have also got views from the audience at the gig and what they really thought.

The reason for me doing this is so that not only has this page got something to read and look at but its also got the readers veiws for people to interact with.
I have  used ways to contact the magazine so that on the next main featured band people can send in what they think.
With having my magazine genre as alternative, rock and indie, this band staring in the features page really represnts the genre well and by the use of words and house colours really promotes it.
I feel that my feauteres page is filled quite well. There are not any white space, everything has its own purpose for where it is and all the text boxes are filled. In my features I have used all of my house colours apart from red. I feel that using a yellow border around the image has worked quite well and makes them stand out a lot more.

2. This is the image I have used for the front cover of my magazine. I have compared it with the front cover of 'Rolling Stone' magazine. The reason why I have chosen this image, is because of how each band member is postioned.

Each band member is slightly facing towards the camera and they seem to be leaning into each other in both magazines, which make them look like close friends/family memebers as well as a band. Both images show two people looking dicrectly at the camera and one of them looking towards the other members.

The angle of both images are straight on, both cutting off at mid thigh.

They are smiling and seem happy, as if they are relaxed and having fun during the photo shoot.

The 'Rolling Stone' photograph is a lot brighter because it has been shot in a studio with a white drop background, where as the photograph I have taken was shot in a backgarden late at night, so that it corresponds with the colour theme of my magazine by having low lighting and being black and white.

In 'Rolling Stone' magazine the band in the photograph seem to have a trade mark by wearing something significant to distinguish themselves. Two of the band members are wearing hats. E.g the band member in the middle is wearing a hat and that may be something he wears in each shoot or when he performs. In my photograph it was more like 'free time' when I took the photo of the band. Just seeing them in casual clothing, having a bit of a laugh and a drink shows more of who they really are rather then a posed photograph.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I have been reasearching Bauer Media Group. Bauer own Kerrang! magazine which has been a very big influence to me throughout my project. Bauer also own a lot of other music, fashion, news and health magazine, so to have a company that are well known and respected for publicity, would ensure that my magazine would be well promoted.

4. My ideal reader is a young male adult.
They would shop in... Topman, Rokit, Jolly Brown, H&M.
There favourite bands would be... Feeder, Led Zeplin, The Rolling Stones, T-rex
Their favourite programes would be... Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks,  Distraction
The reason why they would purchase my magazine is because it has the same humor as their favourite programes which would draw them in.  Also the bands that are featured in my magzine are in the same genre category as their favourite listed bands.

5. I have been to one of Kerrang! magazines festival's and asked 30 people around the arena, what type of magazine they would be more intrested to read out of a list of 5. I gave them a choice of two, taking into consideration they were at a Kerrang festival and would most likely choose that as one of there options.
The results...

Kerrang!        111111111111111111111111       24
Q                   1111111111                                  10
MOJO           1111111                                          7
NME             111111111111111                        15
VIBE             1111                                               4

The morjority chose to read Kerrang, but considering I was at a Kerrang festival I am not surprised at
that result. This is a benifit for me as I have been researching Kerrang! magazine throughout my project.

6. The different programmes I have used for my media project...
For the photogrpahy I have used a Cannon EOS 1000D camera. I did not a tripod for my images because I wanted to be able to move as quick as the images changed and a tripod would have restricted me.

I have used slideshare to upload slide shows about my work.
I have used Serif page puls/Serif photo plus to create my front cover, contents page and features page. To help me edit the photographs and arrange them correctly I have used photoplus.

I have also used paint to help me upload my images or presentations onto my blog.

7. There are restrictions when taking photographs of children and young people. Most of the images will be staged because of the need for permission, but still showing the students and their activities around school. The images are there to represent the school and show what it has to offer, where as a music magazine just shows off what a certain band is about, having posed images of artists or live photographs from gigs.
The layout does not have to be as detailed as it has been for the music magazine. It is able to have a lot more white spaces because the information is the most important part of a school magazine. There has to be logo's of what the school had achieved to promte themselves.

The fonts on a school magazine can be as big and as bold as they like because aswell as informing the parents of whats going on with the school, they still want the students to be as involved and interested in the magazine as possible. With the colours of the magazine they are normally very eye catching on the front cover but then furthur into the magazine they calm down unless there is a certain article that needs to be read.
What I have leant from creating a music magazine and a school magazine, is that there is so much more time and effort put into a music magazine. The reason for this is because a music magazine has a much wider audience then a school magazine. The school magazine will only have the students and their parents where as a music magazine gets delivered all over the UK.

Features Page Flat Plan

The layout of my features page is quite 'squared'. I have used a lot of rectangles and squares because I want my magazine too seem quite formal as well as fun to read. Starting from the left hand side of my flat plan, the first long rectangle will be the start of the article. It will start by introducing four bands that will be featured throughout the magazine. The top box inside the rectangle will be the title of the article and have the names of the featured bands. The bottom box will be a image preview of one of the bands new albums. The two 'L' shaped boxes next to both rectangles will carry on with the rest of the article. The big square box in the middle of the page will be an image of the main featured band live in action. The two boxes in the square will introduce the band and say where they are playing. The 4 shadded rectangles at the bottom of the sqaure will be more live images from the gig and band members. The long rectangle on the right hand side of the features page will be the reviews from the audience at the gig of the main featured band and what they think. The first rectangle inside this will be the title. The next four boxes will be images of the people that have been interviewed. The circle at the end of this rectangle will have contact details for the magazine, so you can tell us your thoughts on any gigs that we have recently featured.
